Reef Rider: The Award-Winning Seahorse Sculpture Headed for the Sea

Reef Rider steel seahorse sculpture glowing at sunrise on Pompano Beach

The Vision Behind Reef Rider
There’s something surreal about watching a 6-foot steel seahorse hover mid-air- balanced on a forklift, framed by Florida sunshine, and destined to become a landmark. Meet Reef Rider: fluid in form, fearless in presence, and ready to make waves.

From Steel to Sea: The Installation Process
This isn’t just public art. It’s the winner of the Pompano Beach Art Contest, selected from a sea of submissions for its striking concept and visual power. And its story won’t end on land. One year from now, Reef Rider will take its final plunge, joining the artificial reef system on the Lady Luck, just off Pompano Beach Pier. From city streets to the ocean floor- now that’s range.

Photographing the installation was a front-row seat to quiet excellence. No big crew. No showy equipment. Just a forklift, two insanely talented artists and the kind of focus you don’t fake. Watching them guide the seahorse into place was like witnessing muscle memory mixed with instinct- calm, controlled, and completely locked in.

The Artists
It was an absolute honor to work alongside Drew and Josh on this project. Their vision, creativity, and attention to detail were inspiring. Our creative connection felt like the beginning of something bigger. I’m genuinely excited to see where this collaboration leads next.

Capturing the Art: Photography of the Installation
The sculpture itself is a contradiction in the best way. Heavy steel shaped to look light, delicate even. Graceful curves that seem to swim through the air. It doesn’t beg for attention, it earns it.

From early morning setup to the final placement, I documented the whole story. There’s drama in the details: textured welds, sunlit metal, a quiet moment between creators. This seahorse isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a statement. And soon, it’ll become a home to marine life- proof that art can live twice.

Life After Installation
I came back a couple of times after the install- once at sunrise, when Reef Rider was catching that perfect early light over the pier, and again when a few kids I’ve photographed before came by and instantly turned it into a playground and a few wild rides. Different days, same vibe: this piece belongs here.
