You’re gonna need a fancier hat than that!
A mint julep is traditionally made with four ingredients: mint leaf, bourbon, simple syrup and crushed ice.
The term ‘julep’ is generally defined as a sweet drink. As a bourbon-based cocktail, it is associated with the American south and the Kentucky Derby. Americans enjoyed not only bourbon based juleps during the nineteenth century but also gin-based juleps made with an aged gin.
How did the Kentucky Derby claim fame to the Mint Julep? This cocktail was promoted by Churchill Downs since 1938. Each year almost 120,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs during the two-day span of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky derby.
My favorite bourbon to make juleps (and most bourbon drinks) is Woodford Reserve Kentucky bourbon
(Maker’s Mark is runner up!) Woodford Reserve is the ‘official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby’.
It is also the name of our sweet Tennessee Treeing Walker Coonhound:)
